Ambulatory Surgeries at Mitr Hospital

Ambulatory surgeries are procedures involving hospitalization of 24 to 72 hrs. Most of these surgeries are pre planned and allow working people to resume activities early. The common conditions include gall stone, Hernia, piles urological, gynecological, ear nose and throat, cosmetic and some orthopedic procedures. Some surgeries for urological problems in children are also managed by similar and shorter hospital stay.

An example of such ambulatory surgery is hernia surgery. doctors have seen hernia surgery  evolve over many centuries.Even as late as the mid-twentieth century, hernia surgey involved hospitalization of 10 to 14 days. Also complete bed rest was advised.with newer techniques of surgical cures including mesh placement and preference to local anesthesia, patients were discharged in three days as late as in 1984.

With the advent of laparoscopic surgery in hernia repair, the hernia patients can be discharged within 24hrs.Lesser hospital stay translates into less expenses also faster recovery.Since the hospital stay is less, patients are motivated to take care of themselves earlier.ofcourse proper case selection is important before ambulatory surgery is offered to patients. In India, patients are still reluctant and require to be reassured of the concept of getting back home the same day. After all,it is a mindset which needs to be changed.Working people or mothers in nuclear families are happy with this advance in surgery and are most willing to undergo such surgeries.

Ambulatory surgery has evolved mainly due to technical advancements in the medical field including anesthesia and surgery.Though the technology per se may be expensive, overall shorter hospital stay, lesser medication and early resumption of work compensate for the higher basic surgery cost. Also patients are either able to reduce leave from work or can take care of themselves and their families.

Further,in this era of insurance for medical treatment ,Laparoscopic surgery is benefited for both patients and insurance companies.
