My Future Plans:
Professional goals for the future
1. To learn and practice advanced ERCP and Endoscopy
I am doing basic ERCP work since last one and a half years. I would like to enhance my skills and learn advanced work in the same. I am interested in starting EUS services in our department.
2. To continue teaching fellows in Gastroenterology
I wish to continue active practice and strive to achieve a good balance of high quality and ethical clinical work, academics and meaningful research in a teaching institution such as the one I currently work at. I am also keen to continue to teach and help in shaping careers of gastroenterologists as long as I practice.
Languages known: English, Hindi, Marathi
During my 3 years of postgraduate training in gastroenterology, I was fortunate to have worked under inspirational teachers.
Dr. Mohandas K Mallath is one of the most prominent names in gastroenterology from India. He is reviewer of the American journal of Gastroenterology. He is head of department of GI services at TATA Memorial hospital.
Our GI unit had 3 postgraduate trainees who attend to 30 – 35 indoor patients. We also cater to an OPD of 80 - 100 patients every alternate day. My duties included patient management and decision-making in the elective and acute setting, training of postgraduate students and administrative duties in wards. In addition to our patient services, we have weekly interactive teaching sessions as a part of our postgraduate training. These include GI pathology, GI radiology, journal club, bedside clinical case presentation and clinical meetings in which all faculties actively participate. After an initial period of guidance we are encouraged to perform endoscopies independently. During my training I have managed GI malignancies and also given chemotherapies. During my training I have performed the following number of endoscopies independently:
Diagnostic UGI endoscopies – 5000
Therapeutic UGI endoscopies – 2000
Diagnostic colonoscopies – 3500
Therapeutic colonoscopies – 1000
Side viewing endoscopies – 700
ERCP’s - 500
I have worked as a Senior Registrar at K.E.M. Hospital, Mumbai which is one of the premier teaching institute of India with an active D.M. Gastroenterology training program. We cater to approximately 300 outdoor patients and 150 indoor patients per week. I have done 30 ERCPs in these 6 months and gained further expertise in other therapeutic procedures. I am also actively involved in teaching fellows in D.M. Gastroenterology. I am working under Dr. Shobana Bhatia who is an eminent teacher and renowned Gastroenterologist in this country. She has been trained in USA in GI motility and is one of the authorities in motility disorders in India with an active GI motility lab. She is the current chief editor of Indian journal of Gastroenterology.
I have worked as a Associate Professor at BYL Nair hospital, Mumbai which is the 1st institute in Mumbai to start the gastroenterology department. We cater to approximately 200 outdoor patients and 100 indoor patients per week. I have gained further expertise in therapeutic procedures. I am also actively involved in teaching fellows in D.M. Gastroenterology.
